Top 8 Holiday Things to Do with Kids in Halifax
The holidays are upon us, and that means that there are a plethora of meals to plan, presents to buy, and charities to support. But wait! Before you get caught up in all of the “things to do” that accompany the season, be sure to plan a bit of fun – especially if you have children in your life. From festivals to Santa sightings, here is our countdown of the top 8 places to head with the young ones in Halifax at Christmastime.
8. Victorian Christmas
Love history? Then this family event is perfect! Teach kids about an era gone by as they experience a Victorian Christmas at the Halifax Citadel. There will be a Victorian photo booth, hot cider, crafts, games, and holiday carols. Children can even visit with Santa while they are there! Admission is free with a non-perishable food donation to Feed Nova Scotia, which is a wonderful way to teach the kids about giving during the holiday season.
7. Silent Santa
All children should get to enjoy the holidays in their way, and that is exactly what the goal of Silent Santa is. Kids with autism can visit with the big guy himself in a quiet environment all by themselves (with mom or dad, too, of course!) so that they are not intimidated by long lines and crowds. Create a special solo memory of time with Santa, and each visit is limited to 10 minutes in length.
6. The Nutcracker
The story of The Nutcracker is one that evokes wonder during Christmastime, and it’s a show that all children should see. Maybe skip this for the teeny ones, but kids who are a bit older will love seeing this classic story come alive with puppets, music, and dancing on the big stage as Symphony Nova Scotia presents The Nutcracker.
5. Annual Hydrostone Tree Lighting
Cookies, visits with Santa, live entertainment, and hot beverages all accompany the Annual Hydrostone Tree Lighting. There is a raffle to win a huge gift basket from the merchants at The Hydrostone Market. If you are looking for an activity with a charitable angle, this is it as you can donate food items, gift cards, toiletries, and bus tickets to the Veith House. Last year’s donations helped over 250 families – what a great thing to be a part of this year!
4. A Cringle Christmas
Take the children to a holiday show at Alderney Landing Theatre, which is buzzing with activity as The Cringle’s North Pole East Coast Distribution Centre. Watch as Gingerbread People prepare gifts for Santa’s big ride! The reindeer are stabled there and see what mayhem and holiday fun ensues as the Central Zone Players produce A Cringle Christmas.
3. Tales of a Charlie Brown Christmas
The Halifax Jazz Festival gets into the holiday spirit with its annual fundraiser, Tales of a Charlie Brown Christmas. They have an evening performance, but there is also a family matinee designed especially for the kiddos! Milk and cookies are a part of the festivities, so the littles can have a treat while they are there enjoying the music and merriment of the season.
2. Halifax Santa Shuffle
Adults can shuffle in this annual 5k Fun Run while the kiddos participate in the 1km Elf Walk. No matter their pace families can enjoy this annual event together. The best part is that dressing up is encouraged! Have fun getting together crazy Christmas costumes like Rudolph, Mrs. Claus, or the 3 Wise Men as you prepare to burn off a few pre-Christmas calories at the Halifax Santa Shuffle.
And #1! Christmas Glow Halifax
If having a winter wonderland indoors seems too good to be true – it’s not! That is exactly what happens when guests visit Christmas Glow Halifax. Adults and kids alike will enjoy light displays, live entertainment, and interactive hanging lights that make the perfect backdrop for an adorable photo.
There are also a ton of child-centric attractions such as bouncy reindeer, visits with Santa, playing on the Magic Rocketship playground, and a ride on Glen the Glow-comotive. Adults can cross items off of their gift list by shopping at the artisan and boutique market booths, and families can enjoy the many food and drink options. Bonus: there is a licensed bar with seasonal beverages for those who are of age.
While you are there, don’t forget to let the little ones stroll through the light tunnel and sit on the LED swings. Christmas Glow Halifax is truly a magical place to be during the holidays as they offer a bit of something for everyone.
No matter what you choose, be sure to plan ahead to include some family fun along the way. Want an extra tip? Sing carols and look at lights while you are on your way home to make your time even more festive.
